Forthcoming Events
Witheridge St John's Fair 2010
Ever since 1248, when King Henry III granted the Lord of Witheridge the right to hold a fair on the feast of St. John the Baptist,
the Witheridge
annual fair has attracted visitors from near and far. This year’s St John’s Fair is on the weekend of 25th, 26th and 27th June, and planning
is already well underway, with a programme packed full of events to include:
Friday 25th June, 7pm: ‘The Nightingale’. A puppet show based on a tale by Hans Christian Andersen from well-known, Devon based company Angel
Heart Theatre. Venue is Witheridge Parish Hall, ticket prices £5 for children, £6.50 for adults.
Saturday 26th June, starting 11am: The Grand Carnival Parade, followed by the annual Devon Town Criers Championship and a full day of entertainment
and fun. The Grand Parade and Fair will have a medieval fancy dress theme, with prizes of £25 each for the winners in three classes: best dressed
stallholder, best dressed child and best dressed adult.
Saturday 26th June, 8pm: Horse racing at the Parish Hall, hog roast and licensed bar.
Sunday 27th June, starting 10am: Car boot sale and bacon butties.
Attractions will include an exciting bungee trampoline, the return of inflatable jousting and the very popular Paintball War Zone from last
year, not to mention ferret racing and the fun dog show. New will be country craft stalls, a coconut shy and Reptobug – with creepy crawlies
and reptiles galore! The egg throwing contest and tug of war return by popular demand.
There will be stalls selling a range of hot and cold food, ice creams and drinks, including the Friends of the School who will serve food,
cold drinks and tea and coffee in the Parish Hall. And there will be a licensed bar in the marquee throughout the day, with live music from
the Pennymoor singers and others.
One of the aims of the fair is to provide an opportunity for local organisations and charities to raise money through street stalls. Spaces
are also available for street stalls and attractions from commercial organisers and bookings are now being accepted. If you would like to
reserve a space please contact Mary Stanbury on 01884 861375 or Desni Botfield on 01884 860825.
More information will be in the St John’s Fair colour programme (on sale in village shops from early June) and on the village website
www.magnafortis.com/charterfair5.htm.
At this stage please address any enquiries regarding the Fayre to the Secretary, Mrs Debbie White on 01884 860207.

October 2010
Plans are in place for a Fund Raising Mouse Racing Evening to be held in the Parish Hall. Further information will be provided nearer that date.
