Some believe that we produce too many movies

Dan Glickman, President of the Motion Picture Association of America, which represents the interests of six Hollywood studios (Paramount, Sony, Fox, Universal, Disney, Warner Bros), was this week last to the Avignon Forum, meeting on culture and the media. Overview of the situation of the American cinema.

How is the movie industry in the United States

The number of entries in cinema is an increase of 4 to 5 in 10 months. However, the DVD market is down - 3.2 in the third quarter of 2009 - while remaining profitable for the studios. A large part of this market has migrated over the Internet. In addition, DVD sales are still penalized by piracy. Finally, the crisis - and the scarcity of funding that it has driven - should result in a decline of 5 of film production. Some believe that we produce too many movies. I don't know if it is true. The only thing I see is that the turnover of our box-office progresses.

Your arrival in 2004, you had made the fight against piracy one of your priorities. Where are you What do you think of the creation and Internet law passed in France

The creation and Internet law is a very good law. In the United States, the film as a whole industry works in the fight against piracy in close collaboration with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). We currently reflect a method which would allow us to implement the equivalent of a graduated response. But the process was complicated by the fact that the 50 US States have the authority on the subject. My belief is that for reflux illegal downloading, the first step is education. I think that sending messages of warning to pirates is an effective way to dissuade Internet users to download illegally. According to some studies, 70 of hackers would stop their illegal practices after a warning. The sanctions must be established on the basis of national legislation. The cut of Internet access for repeat offences would be an option, but other scenarios are possible.

Internet causes deep changes in the consumption of cultural property. Do you think it's rather a friend or an enemy of the creation

If you look at the positive aspect of things, the Internet allows filmmakers from around the world to have access to millions of people that they could not reach so far. Which represents an extremely important growth potential. The negative aspect is that, on the Web, people do feel more obliged to pay to access content that is available. In response, the film industry will have to imagine new models of legal tender, that allow the public to have access to its online content. On television programs, the MPAA members have shown great creativity. For example, they offer their time series after their broadcast on television networks. Allowing them to draw very large incomes. It must never forget that what compels the audience to go see a movie, it is the story that this film tells. This explains the success of "slumdog" millionaire The story was fantastic.

What do you think the release of films on the Internet before the room or while at the same time

I only am not in favour. The theatre remains paramount. It is that decides the success of a film. And studios will do nothing to destroy their economy. However, in times of the films in DVD or video on demand, must be flexible and test all formulas to find the one that will allow to reach the maximum audience.

MGM studios could be relisted. It is an Indian, Reliance, which has recapitalised Dreamworks. Hollywood's missing money

I do not. The evidence is that Hollywood films represent more than half of global box-office. This demonstrates that there is always a market for American production. What is true, however, is that the movie industry is increasingly global. And it is a good thing. The screenwriters, filmmakers from around the world seek to work together.

Hollywood put many on the development of 3D production. Are American farmers ready to follow

The public is excited by these new technologies. The operators in the United States are investing in digitisation in order to meet the demand. Nearly a quarter of American rooms are already digitized. It is not within the jurisdiction of the MPAA to decide on the mode of financing. It seems to me that the 3D assets justify the additional costs.

You plan to leave the Presidency of the MPAA at the end of your term in September 2010. What will be the main site will inherit your successor

The main topic to treat will be of course: how to protect our content in the digital age. It is a complex site that passes through a combination of factors: the shares of teaching to develop the protection of copyright. The Government probably also have a role to play.
